Atonement for Sin VS. Remission of Sin

Do you know the difference between atonement for sin and remission of sin? Atonement is an Old Testament reference to the covering of sin by the shedding of the blood of bulls, goats, rams or some other animal that was determined by God to use for the sin offering. The only problem with it is that it had to be done over and over by the Levitical priest through the centuries.

Leviticus 4:25 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put [it] upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out his blood at the bottom of the altar of burnt offering. 26 And he shall burn all his fat upon the altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings: and the priest shall make atonement for him as concerning his sin, and it shall be forgiven him.

There were times when hundreds of thousands of animals were sacrificed in one day. Imagine a priest having to stand in the sacrificial pits for the better part of a day cutting the throats of animal after animal. It had to have been a bloody mess. I’m sure there were times when the priest had to have been standing knee deep or higher in a pool of blood. And still it was not enough to deal with the sin otherwise the sacrifice would only have to have been made once.

Remission of sin is a totally different thing altogether. When there is remission of sin it means there is no more sin. It is gone and no longer exists. The work of the Cross has eliminated sin. Where there is forgiveness for sin after repentance there is justification for the believer just as if he had never sinned.

Hebrews 10: 15 [Whereof] the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16 This [is] the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. 18 Now where remission of these [is, there is] no more offering for sin
